John Jaramillo has performed regionally, nationally and internationally since 1983. His Pueblo Indian Native American heritage inspired his concept for Old Man Kokopeli – a masked theatre and puppetry production that was featured as part of the famed NYC International Fringe Festival. John has performed at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in New York City, Popejoy Center for the Arts at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, The Circle (theatre) at the American Indian Community House in New York City, Historic Christ Church in Philadelphia, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque and the Institute of American Indian Art Museum in Santa Fe. John Jaramillo also created and currently tours Aztec Dances of Mexico, Flamenco Dance of Spain, and The Pueblo World - Old Man Kokopeli and Stories From the Southwest to universities, schools, libraries, senior centers, festivals, arts centers and cultural centers.
John has performed professionally as a principal performer with Maria Benitez Teatro Flamenco/Segundo Compania, Ritmo Flamenco, Dance Espana, Danzantes, ClancyWorks Dance Company, Pueblo Flamenco de Santa Fe, Naa Kahidi Native American Theatre Company, DayStar Native American Dance Theatre, Prairie Dance Theatre and Gateway Performance Productions. Highlights include performing as a principal dancer at the American Dance Festival, the Dance Theatre Workshop in New York City, Lincoln Center Out-Of-Doors in New York City, Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and multiple performances with the Dallas Opera including " El Amor Brujo" with opera sensation Denyce Graves.
John's education and training include drama, visual art, architecture, ballet, modern, jazz and flamenco dance at the University of New Mexico, visual art at the Institute of American Indian Art, Flamenco dance in Spain with master teachers at the Amor de Dios School of Flamenco Dance in Madrid. He is also instructed in traditional Aztec Dance from Paz Zamora as a performing member of Ehecatl Aztec Dance Troupe and in traditional Neapolitan dances of Italy from Alessandra Belloni while performing with I Giullari de Piazza - Italian Theatre and Music Group in New York City.
In 2008 John performed for participants from around the globe and conducted a workshop at the International Native American Studies Conference at the University of Georgia in Athens. He performed as part of the Martin Luther King Day celebration held at Clark University in Atlanta during their Teaching and Learning For Empowerment Conference. He also performed at the popular Lake Eden Arts Festival - LEAF (theleaf.com) in Asheville, NC and participated in their LEAF in the Schools and Streets program, doing an Aztec Dance and Drumming artist residency with elementary school students.
